Martin Gerard Hinton KC graduated from the University of Adelaide in 1989 with undergraduate degrees in Arts and Law and a Master’s Degree in Law. He then travelled to London where over the next three years he worked as a Crown Prosecutor in addition to undertaking further post-graduate study at the London School of Economics and Political Science. Upon his return to Australia, he spent some time lecturing in criminal law before joining the government legal service, spending time in both the Crown Solicitors Office and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, punctuated by a further year practising in London.
In 2000, he returned to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions as a prosecutor. In this role he rose through the ranks, prosecuting all manner of crimes in our criminal courts. In 2006, he was appointed one of Her Majesty’s Counsel and Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions.
In 2008, he was appointed Solicitor-General.
He spent the next 7.5 years appearing in all courts, including routinely in the High Court of Australia, on the instructions of the Attorney-General.
In 2016 he was appointed as Justice of the Supreme Court of South Australia an appointment from which he resigned in 2019 to return to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions as Director.
